Sri Lanka is unable to protect its maritime boundary from waste disposal by ships

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Marine Environment Protection Authority states that issues have emerged in their attempt to prevent the disposal of garbage and waste from the ships that travel within the Sri Lankan maritime boundary. The authority stated that this happens due to the lack of monitoring facilities using satellites in order to inspect seas surrounding Sri Lanka. General Manager of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Teney Pradeep noted that over 400 ships cross the Sri Lankan maritime boundary daily and despite information on waste being disposed of in Sri Lankan waters, technologically set back would not allow the authority take action against it.
