Language proficiency test for English teachers

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Education has decided to launch a program to assess the knowledge of English language teachers. The aim of the program is to ascertain the language proficiency of such teachers in order to further develop their skills. The Education Ministry added that as a pilot project, it will partner up with a British agency and test the language proficiency of teachers using an online method, covering all 9 districts. 500 teachers have been selected for the pilot project. According to the Ministry, based on a survey, most English language teachers have not met the required standards. Therefore, following the conclusion of this project, those teachers who exceed a certain level of proficiency, will be identified and rewarded. It has also been planned to test the language proficiency of teachers of Sinhala and Tamil language, as the next part of this project.
