Colombo (News 1st): Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara said an agreement on moving garbage from the Colombo Municipality area to Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill site will possibly be reached today (August 7) following discussions. The CMC currently faces an issue in disposing of garbage collected from the Colombo Municipality area after the Kerawalapitiya dumping terminal refused to accept the garbage. The Municipal Commissioner said the garbage collected so far remains in garbage trucks and other storage vehicles. He went on to note the CMC will be compelled to pay Rs. 2.5 million monthly to the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha for disposing garbage at the Aruwakkalu Sanitary landfill site, adding an agreement is to be reached on the financial cost. Nihal Rupasinghe, Secretary Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development said instructions have been given to dispose of all garbage collected from the Colombo Municipality area to the Aruwakkalu Sanitary landfill site. He added the site can accommodate around 600 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis.
