Colombo (News 1st): Nine people were hospitalized following a conflict between two groups in Wellawatta last night (August 5). According to Police, the clash was between a group from a housing complex and workers at a construction site.
The brawl took place at around 10.40 pm and more than 150 people were involved in the incident. Police said tear gas was used to control the situation. Seven three-wheelers, a motorbike, and a car were damaged as a result of the incident.
Three police officers sustained minor injuries and were admitted to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.
Speaking to the media Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that it has been revealed that an issue pertaining to a mobile phone has been the cause of this brawl. He noted that the police had to fire into the sky to disperse these groups and fire tear gas and only then was the police were able to disperse them and ensure security.
He added that as per the information that was revealed through the investigations carried out using CCTV footage they were able to arrest four suspects. He noted that they currently have arrested 5 suspects in total.
