COLOMBO (News 1st); United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala has formally responded to a letter sent by Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, clarifying the UNP’s position on cooperation between the two parties and its decision regarding May Day activities.
She pointed out that May 1 falls on a Poya Day, and that the UNP has previously taken a decision not to engage in political activity on such days, instead dedicating them to religious observances.
In her letter, Athukorala made specific reference to late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, a prominent leader of the UNP, who when serving as Prime Minister had clearly stated that if May Day falls on a Poya Day, it is inappropriate to engage in political activities on that day.
Accordingly, the UNP has informed the SJB that it is not possible for the party to join any May Day rally organised by the SJB or any other political party.
Despite this, Athukorala emphasised that the UNP remains prepared to work together with the SJB on future political matters.
