Colombo (News 1st): President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his views on the eradication of drugs and the illicit alcohol trade in the country at an event held in Divulapitiya. He noted that yesterday 13 people had died after consuming toxic moonshine. He believes that what happened can be justified. He questioned as to why people consume this rubbish. He noted that illicit alcohol has spread across the country and people dying after consuming moonshine is not something new. He added that a group from the government has presented a proposal to the government to abolish the death penalty. He pointed out that the happiest to hear that were criminals, smugglers, rapists, and thugs. The head of state noted that they know that no matter what good thing we attempt to do, there will always be people attempting to obstruct us from doing that thing. He noted that however, the Attorney General has sent a report yesterday noting that a private member motion to remove the death penalty that was presented in Parliament is not legitimate. The president expressed these views addressing the closing ceremony of the "Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu' (Let's Stand Together for the Country) held in Gampaha. This national program to provide solutions for the problems faced by the people, providing monetary facilities, investment facilities, and other donations were carried out for 6 days in the Gampaha district. The president also spoke of the danger the Gampaha district is currently facing. He noted that the district has fallen short of environment protection as a consignment of garbage that was brought down from England was dumped in the district. He said Muthurajawela is the biggest resource in the Gampaha district, however, the politicians are mining lands and destroying the beauty of Muthurajawela. He added that the Ministers and MP's of this government are involved in mining the lands and destroying Muthurajawela. President Sirisena added that on a previous occasion he came here at 6 am and together with the police took into custody a team that was destroying this national resource.
