Member of "AWA" group dies in police shooting

COLOMBO (News 1st): A member of the AWA group has died in a shooting carried out by the police in Inuvil of the Manipai Police division in Jaffna. Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the shooting occurred at around 8.45 p.m. last night (July 20). He further explained that the police launched a search operation upon information received that the members of the AWA group were going to attack houses in Inuwil. When the police were checking vehicles and people traveling in the area, six members of the AWA group who arrived at the incident had tried to attack the police with sharp weapons. The police, in response, had opened fire, during which one of the members were injured. He died upon admission to the hospital. The police further noted that the rest of the members who arrived at the scene had fled the incident. The police media spokesperson added that during investigations carried out after the incident they were able to discover three swords and a motorbike.
