COLOMBO (News 1st) – While locals in the Sabaragamuwa province and the South-Western coastal line of the island are agonized by strong winds and heavy rainfall, locals in several areas including the North and East, are suffering from extreme dry weather.
Data sourced from the Disaster Management Center reveals that more than five hundred and fifty thousand people are currently affected by the drought.
Due to the extreme dry weather that has been worsening steadily over the past few months, locals in the Parakumyaya, Welikanda area are facing difficulties due to the shortage of clean drinking water. Locals in the North, North-Central and Eastern provinces continue to suffer from the drought. The situation has aggravated as the groundwater wells in the areas have also dried up.
