Colombo (News 1st): A altercation between a group of students at the University of Ruhuna and members of the non-academic staff took place this morning (July 9). Ten persons are receiving treatment at the Matara General Hospital. The main administrative building of the University of Ruhuna has been under the control of students as of late. University staff members had entered the administrative building and had attempted to mark their attendance. However, according to News 1st correspondent, the machine to mark attendance was obstructed by a group of students. Following a discussion between the two groups, the students had agreed to leave the premises. However, following an incident, a tense situation was reported. The security detail of the university intervened to control the situation. Twelve persons including 10 students, a member of the non-academic staff and a member of the security detail were injured. Senior Professor at the University of Ruhuna Dr Sujeewa Amarasena noted that about 200 students surrounded the non-academic staff and attacked them to showcase their power. He added that a small group is trying to spread their political power within the university. It was noted that this can only be controlled by the Police and Armed Forces. Treasurer of the Students Union of the University of Ruhuna Sanjewa Gayan noted that they requested the vice-chancellor not to lie before the media as he is already exposed. He added that he cannot give a solution to the problems of the students and is attempting to close down the university.
