1958 tanks across island abandoned; enough to supply water during droughts

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Agrarian Development declared that around 1958 tanks have been abandoned due to various reasons. Most of the tanks are located in Monaragala, Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts and the Northern Province. The head of the Water Management Unit of the Agrarian Development Department, Prabath Vitharana said that there are issues related to the renovation of these tanks due to their location in forest department lands. He added that a request has been made to the Forest Department to grant permission for the renovation of these tanks. According to him, the renovation will minimize issues related to the distribution of water during droughts.
