COLOMBO (News) – A fire in Kalametiya fishery harbour incinerated around 20 fishing vessels last night(June 25). The fire erupted at around 11 pm last night. It was reported that none of the fishing vessels from the Kalametiya fishery harbour were engaged in fishing yesterday (June 25).
News 1st correspondent noted that around 100 fishing vessels were docked at the harbour at the time of the fire.
A watchman on duty had reported the fire to the police as soon as the fire broke out. Police along with the help of the residents in the area contained the fire and consequently, the Tangalle Fire Brigade arrived at the scene to douse the fire.
News 1st correspondents added that the estimated value of one of the fishing vessels and the equipment destroyed was over Rs 2mn.
Police suspects that the fire was a result of a personal dispute and the Hungama Police Division is conducting further investigations.
