Colombo (News 1st): Cyclone ‘FANI’ (pronounced as FONI) is moving away from Sri Lanka and is about 1250 km north-east of Jaffna about to make landfall in India. Strong winds up to 50 kmph can be expected over the island, particularly in Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Monaragala and Trincomalee districts. Showers or thundershowers above 100mm can occur at times over Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Western provinces. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in North-Western, Eastern, Uva and North-Central provinces and in Mannar district. The Met Department requests the general public, naval and fishing communities to be attentive to future advisories.
