Mahiyangana accident : 2 survivors critical

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A total of 14 individuals died across the country due to accidents in the last 24 hours. Mahiyangana A tragic accident in Mahiyangana left ten people dead from the same family. The accident that occurred at about 1.30 am this morning as a private bus and a van collided head-on. The police stated that the van was travelling at a high speed in the opposite lane when it crashed on to the bus. Twelve individuals were in the van and on admission to the Mahiyangana hospital, 10 victims were pronounced dead. Three of the deceased were children, three were women and four men. The surviving 13-year-old girl and a woman were transferred to Badulla hospital due to serious injuries. According to the sources at the hospital, both of them are in the ICU. The Police added that all the victims were residents of Batticaloa. Additionally, six individuals who were on the bus suffered minor injuries and they were hospitalized as well. The Police arrested the driver of the bus over the accident. Anuradhapura An individual travelling on the passenger seat of a bike had died when the bike and a lorry collided. Another person was killed in an accident in Vilachchiya, Anuradhapura. The deceased was a 45-year-old resident of Maha Paladikulama. The motorcyclist was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The lorry driver was arrested over the incident. Hatton Two individuals were severely injured in a motor accident that took place near the Batagalla bridge in Hatton. The accident occurred when a lorry had collided with a motorbike. The police stated that both drivers were under the influence of alcohol. Two individuals on the bike were admitted to the Dickoya General hospital subsequently, one of them was transferred to the Kandy general hospital. Uva Paranagama A person who fell off a bus in Uva Paranagama had died. The News 1st correspondent noted that the victim was travelling in a CTB bus and fell to death when another passenger tried to get off the bus. Following the incident, a tense situation arose in the area and the police officers from Uva Paranagama, Welimada and Udupussellawa were deployed to contain the situation. The driver of the bus was arrested.
