COLOMBO (News 1st) - The new Beliatta-Matara railway line was declared open today (April 08) under the auspices of the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Arjuna Ranatunga. The distance between the two destinations is 26km and it takes 20 minutes to travel between Beliatta and Matara. A first-class, second-class and third-class tickets are priced at Rs.120, 70 and 35 respectively. Seven trains are scheduled to run from Beliatta. One train is destined to Galle, and four trains will terminate at Maradana while one is destined to Jaffna and another to Vauvniya. Three main stations, Kakanadura, Bambarakanda, Wawurukannala and two substations Piladuwa and Weherahena are constructed between the two destinations for the convenience of the public. The overall construction cost was estimated to be US$ 278.2mn and it was funded by the China Exim Bank.
