Colombo (News 1st): A group of councilors of the Southern Provincial Council staged a protest against the actions of the current government.
They claimed that the government broke into the Central Bank after they came into power, they increased taxes, on the other hand, they postponed the local government elections. They went onto note that Buddhist monks are in jail, soldiers have been put in jail and the government is suppressing the opposition who are against separating the country. They stressed that they are carrying the corpse this government.
Southern provincial councillors Shammu Ariyawansa, Aruna Gunarathne, Kapila Dissanayake arrived at the council with a group of their supporters carrying a coffin. Security officers prevented the group from carrying the coffin into the chambers.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Piyal Nishantha arrived at parliament today wearing a black scarf. He alleged that the government had not done anything for the development of tourism in Beruwala, the region he represents.
MP Piyal Nishantha noted that Bentara, Beruwala is the heart of the tourism industry in Sri Lanka and 8 out of the 14 main tourist hotels in Bentara, Beruwala have been closed down. He noted that officials and politicians involved in the tourism industry are silent. He noted that even though he requested the Minister of Tourism to look into the matter, the Tourism Minister has not set foot in this tourism zone in 4 years.
