COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka Navy discovered 35 parcels containing 1232.5 kilos f beedi leaves floating in the Chilaw seas.
The Navy stated that a quick reaction squadron attached to Wayamba Naval Command managed to seize the parcels of beedi leaves in an operation carried out yesterday (March 25).
The Navy believes, smugglers would have unloaded the cargo at sea with floatation devices attached, in a gamble to smuggle them into the country.
The parcels were handed over to the Sinnapadu Customs office for further investigations.
Within three months of this year, the Navy have seized over 7000 kilos of beedi leaves which were smuggled into the country.
