Colombo (News 1st): TNA Parliamentarian E. Saravanapavan speaking in parliament today (March 23) noted that when talking about media there is no difference between Mahinda Rajapaksa's government and Ranil Wickremesinghe's government. He added that the current government can say that media suppression during the Rajapaksa regime does not happen during this government, but there is no difference between the two governments. They let the murderers roam freely. He questioned the parliament if the current government was able to arrest anyone who killed the journalists? Saravanapavan said if they cannot arrest the murderers, that means that they assist in the murder. He questioned as to where the justice is in labeling media as black media while shouting that they (politicians) are being attacked by the news broadcasters. He noted that it is sad that certain people from factions also assist in such attacks against media. On December 21st, 2018, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa is lucky because when he files cases against media as he could collect around Rs 100 million.  He noted that this is what you call black media. He noted that they have proposed to hold a debate about black media in January and reveal names, from top to bottom. Meanwhile, on January 16, 2019, TNA MP Sumanthiran noted that there are rumors in the south that are being spread by Sirasa, Shakthi, and MTV media units. He said it is the media who stoop lower than the politicians to engage in politics and it cannot be tolerated anymore. Sumanthiran went onto note that is why certain things are done against MTV as black media. Meanwhile, speaking at an event today (March 23), parliamentarian Keheliya Rambukwella expressed his views regarding media freedom. He noted that it is not suitable to regulate media as the media can do self-regulation.  He noted that they (Government) can take the necessary steps if there is any deviation. He stressed that there should be media freedom as they cannot have a right to information act and on the other hand attempt to regulate the media. Rambukwella went onto note that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe always asks to keep the cheques ready to pay compensation. The parliamentarian noted that the government has pressurized the media so much, but they also go around saying that there is media freedom. He noted that this is an attempt to stop the objections raised by the people of this country.
