COLOMBO (News 1st) – Women; a critical force for the continuation of mankind. Women; a figure courted by men and wanted by their doting children. Women; the force that keeps a family bonded. Yet women, are they given equal opportunities, equal rights in society, equal pay and an equal amount of recognition? All these are the usual burning questions in the mind of a woman.

With the changing trends, women from all over the world have come forth and raised their voices to protect what’s theirs and demand for equality. But, have they forgotten how worthy it is to be treated as the beautiful and strong lady she is in society? Have they forgotten that they are already treasured for who they are?

When did it all begin?

Women’s day that falls on the 08th of March every year and celebrated all over the world is a remembrance of that unique facet of society; the woman.

As a global initiative that first came into place in the year 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York city demanding for voting rights, better pay and shorter working hours. This day was later tabled as a national holiday in over 25 countries globally. International Women’s Day (IWD) was first celebrated on the 19th of March 1911. The day was officially adopted by the United Nations in 1975 and is now celebrated by more than 100 countries.

Countries such as Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, Laos, Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, and Herzegovina celebrate both women’s day and mother’s day together so as to provide an added value to their female community.

This year the International Women’s Day is celebrated under the theme of ‘Balance for Better’ which calls for a better push for gender parity/equality across the globe.

Why do we celebrate the day?

The day aims in helping nations worldwide to eliminate what can be termed as gender discrimination and also help women gain full and equal participation in global development. It is also a day where women, as the strong and compelling force she is, are recognized for their achievements regardless of the ethnic, linguistic, economic and cultural divisions.

To all women out there you are blessed and beautiful! You know your worth, the world knows it. You are celebrated, loved and appreciated for who you are. Your mere existence is vital and cherished.
