24 Sri Lankan fishermen apprehended by Maldives

Colombo (News 1st): Twenty-four Sri Lankan fishermen and 4 fishing vessels have been apprehended by security officials patrolling the Maldives maritime boundary.

Director Operations of the Department of Fisheries Kalyani Hewapathirana said that the fishermen had departed from the Chilaw Fisheries Harbor in order to carry out their fishing activities.

She said investigations were underway to determine how a person under the age of 18 was among the arrested fishermen. She added that the Maldivian government has been contacted in order to secure the release of the fishermen.
