Colombo (News 1st): A protest was carried out by several teachers' guilds opposite the Ministry of Education. It was dispersed by the police using tear gas and water cannons.
The protest was organized by trade unions of the education sector led by the Ceylon Teachers Union and few other unions. The key issue was the irregularities in the salaries of teachers and principals.
The police used water cannons to stop the protesters from entering the ministry of education. The protestors then blocked the road opposite the ministry. They demanded that their problems be heard directly by a secretary. A person who was injured in the incident and was admitted to the hospital.
General Secretary of the union Mahinda Jayasinghe noted that Akila Viraj had placed his goons inside the ministry and they (goons) had attacked them. He added that the Police also attacked the protesters with tear gas and water cannons.
Jayasinghe said the blood of their comrades was spilled today and therefore their agitation will not end. He warned that they will stage an even bigger demonstration on the 13th.
