COLOMBO (News 1st) - The largest haul of heroin discovered in Sri Lanka was taken into police custody yesterday(February 24) from Kollupitiya. It is believed that the haul of heroin was smuggled into the country by an infamous Sri Lankan drug trafficker in Dubai. It has been revealed that the drug trafficker had sought the help of another drug peddler from a South Asian country to smuggle the large haul of heroin into Sri Lanka. Two suspects were arrested yesterday(February 24) along with the haul of heroin. Information was given to the police by a drug trafficker living overseas. They were arrested when they arrived to retrieve the heroin. The seized vehicles which were used to transport the haul of heroin are registered under the names of two individuals residing in Panadura. The police have identified that these vehicles were obtained under lease agreements. Police stated that among the apprehended suspects was a chief suspect. The haul of drugs is to be handed over to the Government Analysts Department. It will then be produced before the judiciary along with the government analyst's report. Ruwan Wijewardene, State Minister of Defence noted that they are yet to discuss what measures are to be followed regarding the seized haul of heroin. He stressed that the shipment is to be held in the custody until it is produced before the courts. He added that the public has the right to know what will be done to the haul of heroin and the officials must maintain transparency.
