What happens to Makandure Madush next?

COLOMBO (News 1st) -Forty suspects including "Makandure Madush" arrested at a hotel in Dubai were produced in courts in Dubai today (February 10). Several accomplices of Madush were arrested today in various parts of the country. Accomplice arrested in Grandpass The Police Special Task Force arrested Andarawatte Chamara suspected to be a drug peddler as well as an accomplice of Makandure Madush and Angoda Lokka. He was arrested at Mahawatta, Grandpass early this morning (February 10). A hand grenade and 5g of heroin was also seized from the suspect's possession. It was also revealed that Chamara has connections with Dematagoda Chaminda. Chaminda is currently under remand custody. Chamara is a wanted criminal. His crimes include intimidation using firearms and obtaining ransoms. Two arrested in Suriyawewa The police arrested Hettiarachchige Asela Eranga and Nalaka Susantha Kumara today at Viharagala, Suriyawewa. The duo are suspected of helping Makandure Madush's criminal activities including drug peddling. The police seized a T-56 weapon and 20 live ammunition and a gram of heroin from the suspects. The Tangalle Crimes Division carried out the arrest. The duo had also handled the funeral arrangements of Makandure Madush's father. Wennapuwa arrest Shanaka Madhushanka alias Sirigampola Olumara was arrested last night (February 09). He was arrested at his house in Wennapuwa. He had over two grams of heroin in his possession. He was remanded till Monday (February 11). Eleven others including a woman who were at the location to buy heroin were also arrested. They were later released on bail. The police are also tracking Shiva who is believed to have arranged for Madush to travel overseas. Although the STF had raided his house in Kochchikade the suspect was not to be found. The criminal feats of "Makandure Madush" Makandure Madush and Angoda Lokka who are under arrest in Dubai are suspected to be connected to several murders in addition to drug racketeering. The key allegation against Makandure Madush is the murder of the former chairman of the Southern Development Authority Danny Hiththatiya in 2006. There are also several reports of murders said to have been committed with the involvement of Makandure Madush while he was in Dubai last year. Seven persons including Ranale Samayan were shot dead while travelling in a prison bus. IP Neomal Rangajeewa was targetted in a shooting in Piliyandala. This shooting claimed the life of a police constable and a child. Makandure Madush is connected to five murders committed in the Kaduwela, Thalangama and the Southern Province last year. Meanwhile, Dubai Police state that they arrested over 289 suspects wanted by other countries found living in Dubai. The majority of these suspects are for human trafficking, money laundering, financial crimes and involvement in organized criminal gangs. Dubai media reveals that 120 such suspects have been handed over to countries where the suspects have criminal records. Will Dubai extradite Makandure Madush and the others arrested to Sri Lanka? News 1st spoke to Attorney-at-law Javed Yusuf, former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He said that as per the law criminals convicted of a crime will be sentenced in Dubai. It is only after the expiry of the sentence that further steps will be considered. He continued saying that Sri Lanka and Dubai do not have an extradition treaty. As such, Dubai will not send the suspects back to Sri Lanka. Javed Yusuf cited an example where monies earned fraudulently were in banks in Dubai. Although several local representatives went to Dubai to arrest the accused, they were not successful. The attorney added that as per the current situation that he does not believe that Dubai will send the criminals back to Sri Lanka immediately.
