PM explains delay in Provincial Council elections

COLOMBO (News1st) – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe vested the four-storeyed building of the Balapitiya Divisional Secretariat with the public today (Feb 10). The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 74.8 million.

The Prime Minister speaking at the event said that there is no agreement reached with regard to the electoral system. He continued to say that the main political parties have one stance while the smaller parties have another stance.

Wickremesinghe also said that although they attempted to implement a new electoral system at the local government election, everyone was of the opinion that it is not good. He added that at present there is still a problem as to how the Provincial Council elections should be held and that until it is solved that they cannot even present a draft bill.
