Government fails to pay potato farmers

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Potato farmers in the Welimada area have been severely inconvenienced due to the failure of the government to pay for the produced purchased by them. A group of farmers noted that the government bought potatoes with the promise of paying Rs. 92 per kilo. The national organizer to the All Ceylon Farmers' Federation, Namal Karunarathna mentioned that government had bought 2,044,000 kg of potatoes from the areas of Uva Paranagama, Welimada. He noted that the payment for the above-mentioned potatoes is yet to be provided. When the News 1st team reached the Co-operative Commissioner he refrained from commenting on the matter.
