Latest developments surrounding the arrest of Makandure Madush

Colombo (News 1st): The arrest of the underworld drug kingpin in Dubai 'Makandure Madush' is a hot topic. There have been a number of developments locally.

 

Mistress's vehicle

 

Police seized a vehicle believed to

be owned by

the mistress of ‘Makandure Madush’ from a house in Padukka.

Investigations are underway to determine if this vehicle

was used

for any unlawful activities

. Police arrested the two residents of the house aged 54 and 26.

 

Investigations revealed that the woman believed to be Madush’s mistress left a month ago to Dubai

. The woman is a resident of Maharagama. She is the wife of the deceased underworld leader ‘Kalu Thushara’.

 

Corporal connected to 'Jangaa' arrested

 

The Sri Lanka Army arrested a corporal suspected to be an associate of Anushka Kavishal alias 'Jangaa'

. 'Jangaa' was also arrested with 'Makandure Madush' in Dubai.

 

The army spokesperson said that the corporal is now under the police custody for further interrogation

.

Police seized 8 kits

similar to

army uniforms during a raid carried out on the house of Anushka Kavishal in Thalalla, Gandara

. Police suspect the uniforms belong to the arrested corporal.

 

Ryan Van Rooyen's  vehicle

 

Weligama police seized the vehicle believed to used by actor Ryan Van Rooyen. Van Rooyen

was arrested

with the underworld drug kingpin ‘Makandure Madush’. The vehicle was at a hotel owned by Amila Prasanna Hettihewa alias ‘Sunshine Sudda’. 'Sunshine Sudda' was also arrested with Madush in Dubai.

Though the vehicle

is registered

to another person, police say they have evidence to show that Ryan Van Rooyen used this vehicle

.

 

Commissioner of Prisons requests Madush's arrest reports

 

Commissioner of Prisons requested the Inspector General of Police for a report on any officials of the Department of Prisons arrested with Makandure Madush in Dubai

.

 

Prisons Headquarters also requested a report from the Controller of Immigration and Emigration.

 

Many photographs and videos of the party where 'Makandure Madush' and the others arrested are in circulation

.

 

Political response

 

'Mankandure Madush's arrest drew several comments from the political arena:

 

Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka thanked the President, Police, and the Dubai security authorities for their efforts

.

He hoped that

just

as the authorities found Madush, they would be able to find Udayanga Weerathunga, Arjuna Mahendran and Jaliya Wickramasooriya

He said the Government must put in place extradition laws with countries like Dubai and Singapore where fugitives hide

.

 

General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Tilvin Silva said that the drug heroin made from Poppy flowers is not manufactured in Sri Lanka

. He noted that since Sri Lanka is an island, there are no boundaries and heroin is either brought by air or sea. He questioned, "How is it smuggled into a country with customs and the security forces?" Silva said that the truth is that politicians help the smugglers.

 

Western Province Governor Azath Salley says he requested party leaders to ask for a police report when calling for nominations

. He believed that if police reports

are obtained

of the 225 members, not even 125 will remain.

He said that such a law must apply not only in the Parliament but also in Provincial Councils and Municipal Councils
