Does the UNP have a moral right to introduce constitutional amendments

COLOMBO (News 1st) - There is a great deal of talk among the general public about a proposed new Consitution which is being championed by the UNP. However, does the UNP have a moral right to bring about such a proposal? Whenever there was a leadership challenge from within the UNP, a ploy that was used to diffuse the situation was the appointment of committees. It was this ploy that gave rise to the Panditharatne committee and the Leadership Council. The latest reincarnation of this ploy is known as the Wijeyawardene Committee. All these committees only served one purpose, it provided time for Ranil Wickremesinghe to quash whatever dissent is present in the party and reaffirm his grip on power. As soon as Wickremesinghe regains control he methodically sweeps the findings of these committees under the carper. Isn't this the same fate that befell the Wijewardene Committee report? How can such an individual or party bring about a fair constitution which would benefit the nation, when democracy within the party is being suppressed through dictatorship. Minister of Justice Thalatha Athukorale addressing a public rally dismissed opposition claims that the PM is attempting to divide the nation through a new constitution. Athukorale claimed that as long as they remain in the party they would not allow any force to divide the nation or occupy it. Meanwhile, UPFA MP Mahindanada Aluthgamage says that the TNA claims that this is the first constitutional draft for the devolution of power in the North. He continued to say that he can assure the people of the North that all this is nothing but a lie. MP Aluthgamage says that if a proper solution was to be given then the PM would have presented it before Parliament instead of presenting a piece of paper prepared through a committee. He added that it has come to a situation where Ranil Wickremesinghe does everything Sumanthiran asks of him because the government cannot continue without the TNA. MP Aluthgamage assured the people of the North that they will receive justice only under a Mahinda Rajapaksa administration.
