Colombo (News 1st) -In an exclusive interview with Newsfirst today, Auditor General Gamini Wijesinghe noted that the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka at the time, cannot abrogate responsibility with regard to the bond scam.
In an article published in a Sunday Newspaper this week, Charlie Mahendran, the father of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, questioned the manner in which his son had been portrayed as a criminal. In his article, the elder Mahendran had questioned what evidence exists to justify such a portrayal.
When asked about the article written by Charlie Mahendran and his claims that actions against his son are politically motivated, the Auditor General stated that if there is a financial irregularity in any institution the blame is directed at the Chief Accounting Officer. He noted that like it or not this is the same with the Central Bank.
Wijesinghe stated that there is no need to talk about such incidents further because the facts have already been revealed, but stated that he could not express his views on whether legal action will be taken.
The stance of the Auditor General is also underscored in the Audit report on the bond scam.
Why is Charlie Mahendran unable to comprehend this?
