President to request for Thripitaka to be named as world heritage

COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Maithripala ASirisena today (January 50) declared Thripitaka a national heritage. The ceremony took place at the Mathara Aluviahare temple.  

Over 2000 theros including the Mahanayake theros and the Anunayake theros of the three sects attended the event.

 

Ministers, Nilames, Public officials and other dignitaries were among those that attended.  

Anunayaka of Ramannya Sect noted that the declaration of the Thripitaka as a national heritage will protect the 2500 years of history. 

The President said that the declaration of the Thripitaka as a national heritage should be a moment of happiness for all religions.

 

He added the Thripitaka cannot

be translated

, altered or used for other purposes without permission

.

 

The President added that he will lobby the UN Secretary-General to declare Thripitaka a world heritage.

 

A stamp to mark the historic event has also been released.
