COLOMBO (News 1st) - A group headed by the UNP is now in an attempt to bring in a new constitution. The 19th amendment to the constitution was brought in to mitigate the executive powers of the president. This leaves a question as to whether there is an ulterior motive behind this new constitution. Minister of Public Enterprise & Kandy Development, Lakshman Kiriella commenting on the matter noted that they are currently preparing a new constitution which they hope to present in parliament in the new year. He continued to say that no changes will be made to the 9th section of the constitution which safeguards Buddhism in the country. "The Sinhalese term for a unitary government will be included in the Sinhalese, Tamil and English copies of the new constitution, so that the term (unitary government) will never be misinterpreted by anyone" stated the Minister. Kiriella added that they had refused proposals by Tamil political parties to use the term "Oramiththanadu " and had reiterated that the Sinhala term should be used in all three languages. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who met with the Mahanayakas recently, also made similar statements to those of Minister Lakshman Kiriella. However, those steering the drafting of the new constitution had a different thing to say:-  TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran during a media briefing questioned members of the Tamil media on the use of the term "Otreiachci." He noted that when the PM spoke to the mahanayake and mentioned the term unitary state, the Tamil media reported it as "Otreiachci." While claiming that this is not the correct translation of the word, Sumanthiran noted that the word "Orumiththanadu" has been mentioned in the draft of the new constitution. Meanwhile the Propaganda Secretary of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Attorney-at-Law Thushara Dissanayake questioned if the statement made by MP Sumanthiran on the new federal constitution is true. He noted that the TNA has taken the initiative of revealing to the entire country the manner in which this constitution is being drafted and how it is being presented to the parliament through Sumanthiran.  Dissanayake questioned the UNP and the JVP whether the claims made by Sumanthiran are true? Dissanayake claimed that the TNA extended their support to Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament to bring about this federal constitution.
