90,000 DUI arrests in 2018

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The police confirmed that nearly 90,000 people have been arrested so far within the year for driving under the influence (DUI). Traffic Administration and Road Safety Director SP Indika Hapugoda said that this number is a rise of roughly 15,000 compared to the year 2017. He further said that the police arrest around 400 to 450 drunk drivers on a daily basis with around 50 drivers being arrested from Colombo. SP Indika Hapugoda said that a special operation has been launched to apprehend drunk drivers and others who violate road rules, during the festive period which will be in effect till the 15th of January 2019. He added that 1,000 police officers have been deployed for security in and around Colombo during the festive period.
