Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the
23rd Prime Minister of the
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka before the President yesterday (December 16).

President Maithripala Sirisena in his statement yesterday stated that he decided to hand over the
premiership to Ranil Wickremesinghe as he was a leader who
respected parliamentary traditions and
democracy.

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his address at the
Carlton residence yesterday (December 16) assured the people that they will
topple the government when the time comes just as they had done before.
4. The
UPFA confirmed that a
final decision on the
position of opposition leader will be made today (December 17) at the
parliamentary group meeting.

President Maithripala Sirisena appointed
Saman Ekanayake as the
Secretary to the newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (December 16).

UNP MP Eran Wickremerathne stated yesterday (December 16) that the
cabinet of ministers will be
appointed within the
next 48 hours and that it will be
limited to 30 individuals.
7. Further
investigation into the display of the
recent unruly behaviour within the
parliamentary chambers has been handed over to the
Criminal Investigations Department.
8. The
Police Narcotics Bureau yesterday (December 16) arrested a
23-year-old Bangladeshi woman for the
possession of 32kg of Heroin.
9. The
Department of Prisons confirmed that a
list of 20 drug dealers who have been
sentenced to death has been submitted to the
Presidents office once again.

Official Spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar making a statement yesterday (December 16) welcomed the
resolution of the
political situation in Sri Lanka.
