Crime Wave: Shootings, stabbings and weapons recoverie

Colombo (News 1st): During the past few days, Sri Lanka has experienced a number of crimes and murders across the country. This was even more evident following a shooting in Mattakkuliya this afternoon (December 10) where 6 people were injured and rushed to the hospital. The incident in Mattakkuliya unfolded near the 'Rasamuna Kanda' when two men on a motorcycle opened fire at a three-wheeler injuring the passengers and a passer-by. They have been admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo. Police say the victims were returning from a hearing at the court complex in Hultsdorp at the time of the incident. According to the police, the shooters used T56 assault rifles for the drive-by. Police suspect the shooting may have stemmed from a long-standing dispute between two gangs. On October 22, 2018 - a man known by the alias 'Chooti Ukkuwa' was gunned down along with three others in Samithpura, Mattakkuliya. Police say that Chooti Ukkuwa's brother and sister are among the wounded from today's shooting.

Hacked to death in Kuruwita

The bodies of two men who had been hacked to death in Kuruwita were discovered last night. Our correspondent said that the men had been murdered at around 10 pm. The deceased have been identified Sanath Kumara (35) from Kiriweldeniya and M.P. Suranga (34) from Mandadeniya. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the two men, who work as miners, had been involved in an argument with another group.

Stabbed to death in Peradeniya

A man was stabbed to death in the Spring Hill Estate, Peradeniya last evening (December 9). The victim has been identified as Danushka Madushan (27) from Dangolla, Kandy. Two 25-year-old cousins of the victim have been identified as the suspects of the murder. They are said to be residents of the same area.

VIP Firearms recovered

9 firearms including a mini-uzi, typically used by VIP security personnel, were recovered during a raid in Deenagoda, Beruwala by the Law Enforcement Unit, Kalutara. A suspect connected to the incident was apprehended in Lathpadura, Badureliya along with a haul of meat and live ammunition. The Mathugama Magistrate's Court issued detention orders for the suspect, who will be questioned until December 14.

19-year-old with a Shotgun

Police accosted a man behaving suspiciously in Dampe, Meegoda and found a rudimentary shotgun and four 12-bore rounds of ammunition in his possession. Police said the suspect is 19 years of age. Questioning led to the arrest of another 37-year-old suspect in Weragala, Padukka. A search of the suspect's house returned a revolver, 56 rounds of ammunition for a T56 assault rifle and 9 rounds of ammunition for the revolver.
