COLOMBO (News 1st): UNP's Mujibur Rahman has said that if the UNP has the majority in Parliament, "it is the UNP that must decide" who the next Prime Minister is. Rahman said this in response to the President's statement where he said he will not appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as PM "as long as he is alive".
"We are not bound to appoint whoever President Maithripala Sirisena wishes. He can look at who is good in the SLFP and appoint them. We have no problem with that. But it is the UNP that will decide who their Prime Minister should be."
He also made it clear that Ranil Wickremesinghe has not said that he cannot work with the President.
When questioned if the UNP would take a step back considering the people's perspective, he counter-questioned; "Why should we step back?". Rahman said the UNP "will go into the opposition if Mahinda Rajapaksa can show a majority".
