COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Council for Road Safety will be conducting a special meeting today (November 08) to address the issues with regard to the registration of electric vehicles in Sri Lanka. The Chairman of the council, Dr. Sisira Kodagoda said that the discussion will be held with the Department of Motor Traffic. The Police stated that they face several issues due to a misconception that the registration of electric vehicles are not mandatory. However, upon an inquiry made by News 1st on the matter, the Department of Motor Traffic confirmed that it is mandatory to register every electric vehicle used in Sri Lanka. The Department added that thus far 6729 electric vehicles, 528 Diesel - Electric Hybrid vehicles and 155,471 Petrol - Electric Hybrid vehicles have been registered with them.
