UNPers launch protest inside Hambantota Urban Council

Colombo (News1st): Tensions arose at the monthly General Meeting of the Hambantota Urban Council today (November 07) when Councillors of the United National Party (UNP) launched a protest inside the chambers. UNP Councillors attended the meeting wearing black armbands in a show of protest against the appointment of the new Prime Minister and for Parliament not being convened. They raised placards bearing slogans inside the Chambers causing an uproar from councilors of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). In the midst of the arguments, the UNP councilors stated that they (SLFP) will be cursed by the 6.2 million people in the country. Mayor of the Hambantota Urban Council Eraj Fernando noted that the  6.2 million people that the UNPers are talking about include the supporters of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Tamil National Alliance and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He went onto note that the UNP only as about 3 million voters. Due to the persisting tense situation inside the Chambers, proceedings had to be concluded prematurely.
