Colombo (News1st): A protest was staged by the United National Party (UNP) opposite the Temple Trees in Colombo today (October 30). The rally commenced at around 1 PM with the participation of party supporters from several areas. Leaders of the UNP and joint leaders of the United National Freedom Front (UNFF) also joined the rally.

Speaking at the rally Assistant leader of the UNP Ravi Karunanayake stated that the UNP and the UNFF together stand united and committed to protecting democracy. He noted that they will continue to provide Samurdhi benefits and jobs, construct roads, houses and provide Mahapola scholarships. Karunanayake stated that although the party has harassed him, this is the time to leave those aside and unite.

Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa took to the stage to thunderous applause and stated that they will look for democracy in parliament adding that people should not resort to violence. He added that he came prepared to face death just like his father in the defense of democracy. Premadasa went onto note that he is willing to sacrifice his life for the people of this country as well as for democracy.

The leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that they will not allow the government to betray the mandate of people as it is a shameful deed. He added that what the government expected was for them (UNPers) to be like prisoners on Monday after what happened on Friday but instead they used the Temple Trees as a symbol of democracy. He noted that parties of the UNFF and several other parties requested to convene parliament but instead, they prorogued it. Wickremesinghe went onto note that even though the government tries to run away from the problem they (UNP) won’t let them

Meanwhile, Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage issued an injunction order with regard to the protest organized by the United National Party. According to the injunction order, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and several others were prohibited from entering into government premises and it prohibited the demonstration from taking place in a manner that inconveniences the public and disturbs the peace. However, the protest which was held in a peaceful manner concluded this evening.
