Colombo (News1st) : Following the announcement that Mahinda Rajapaksa was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka before President Maithripala Sirisena a complicate situation has arisen where there are two individuals claiming that they are the Prime Minister.
PM Ranil Wickremesinghe who was in Galle at the time returned to Colombo and engaged in a hasty discussion with UNP parliamentary members. He remained defiant as he stated that he is still the Prime Minister under article 42 of the 19th amendment.
Wickremesinghe claims that he continues to have a majority in Parliament and that no other group could show a majority. He noted that the only way to remove him is through a no-confidence motion or if he hands in a letter of resignation. He challenged any other group to show in parliament if they have a majority.
He noted that he spoke with other parties involved in the Government and assured the media that was present that they continue to remain with him.
“The country is not in a crisis, I am the PM.” Ranil Wickremesinghe stated before he exited the media briefing to the applause from UNP MPs who had gathered behind him.
