Parami Wasanthi wins Bronze at Youth Olympics

Colombo (News1st) - Parami Wasanthi Maristela Fernando of Sri Lanka Athletics, won a Bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Bueno’s Aires, Argentina today (Oct 15). She is the first female youth athlete to win a medal at this level. Parami Wasanthi won the bronze, recording a time of 6 minutes 33.06 seconds in the 2000 meter Steeplechase event. This is also a personal best for Parami. Parami also took part in the 4 Kilometer Cross Country event and secured the 17th Place. Athletes taking part at the Youth Olympic Games have to compete at two stages and the medals are awarded based on the overall results. Her overall performance at the 2000m Steeplechase event and her performance today were taken into account for her bronze medal. After Susanthika Jayasinghe's bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships, this is the highest prestige an athlete has brought to the country.
