Venom looks set to infect weekend US box office with $68.5 million

Reuters - It may have been poorly received by critics, but Sony Pictures' 'Venom' looks set to top the US box office for the weekend ending Sunday (October 7) with an estimated haul of $68.5 million, according to website boxofficereport.com. 'Venom' is an adaptation of a Marvel Comics character, who came out of the Spider-Man franchise, which Sony owns the rights to. Coming in second place is the Bradley Cooper helmed adaptation 'A Star is Born', which sees Lady Gaga making her feature film debut as a singer trying to make it to the big time. The film is expected to take $48.5 million this weekend. 'Smallfoot', a role reversal animation where yetis discover a human being, comes in at third with a further $13.8 million predicted. Universal Pictures holds the fourth and fifth places with 'Night School' and 'The House with the Clock in its Walls' which are estimated to bring in $12 million and $6 million respectively.
