COLOMBO (News 1st); Indian Actor 'Thalapathy' Vijay has dramatically reshaped the political landscape of Tamil Nadu by registering a stunning victory in his very first electoral contest. Contesting under his newly formed party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay led the party to win 108 of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
With this outcome, TVK has emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly, overtaking established political forces such as the DMK and AIADMK. The victory also saw sitting ministers defeated in constituencies long considered safe, underlining the scale and impact of TVK’s debut performance.
Although TVK has fallen short of the majority mark of 118 seats, the result has triggered widespread speculation that Vijay may soon take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The party is currently just 10 seats away from a clear majority, further fuelling discussions around possible alliance negotiations.
Following the election results, fans have also revisited a striking moment from Vijay’s 2024 film The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT), initially planned as his final film.
A scene from the movie, now widely shared on social media, shows Vijay’s character driving a car with the registration number “TN 07 CM 2026.” Supporters believe this was a clear hint,or manifestation,of his ambition to become Chief Minister in the 2026 elections.
By the time GOAT was released, Vijay had already formed TVK and publicly indicated his intention to contest the elections and aim to form the government.
Vijay officially launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024, after having expressed political aspirations well before the party’s formation. Around the same time, he had signalled plans to step away from films and enter active politics. His later films, including GOAT, were seen by fans as containing subtle references to his political future.
TVK’s victory is being described as a blockbuster political debut, as the party defeated the decades-old DMK regime in Tamil Nadu, a state long regarded as a stronghold of Dravidian politics for more than 50 years.
With 108 seats secured, TVK now stands at the center of Tamil Nadu’s political negotiations, marking a turning point in the state’s political history.
