CBSL blocks Rs 150mn transaction to a Ministers account

Colombo (News1st): Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy was left speechless for a few moments when a question was posed to him by a Journalist regarding a suspended transaction worth Rs 150 million, which he claimed was being debited to the bank account of a minister. Responding to the question the governor stated that he was not aware of the matter, however, he stressed that the Central Banks Financial Intelligence Unit, which is an independent body informs of him of such matter after conducting their own inquiries. He said as Governor he cannot intervene into any investigation on suspicious transactions. Deputy governor of the CBSL Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe commenting on this regard stated that the information will not be shared with anyone, not even the Governor. He noted that a system has been established by the law and accordingly no one will know who received and who deposited the money. He added that the relevant officials might be know the complete details but the law prohibits them from discussing the details.
