COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Department of Meteorology said showers exceeding 100 mm can be expected in several parts of the country.
The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was reported from Rathmalana which was 90mm. 77mm of rainfall was reported from Mattala while 85 mm of rainfall was reported in Colombo. Duty Meteorologist Buddhika Bandurathne said that rainfall exceeding 100mm can be expected in a number of districts today.
The Meteorology department added that showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva and Central provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kaluthara and Kurunegala districts after 2.00 p.m. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Sabaragamuwa province as well. Several spells of light showers will occur in the coastal areas of the Western and North-western provinces in the morning (September 24).
Gale winds that swept through Kirimetiyawa, Kahatagasdigiliya caused considerable damage to houses in the area. Several injuries were also reported.
