New members for the Constitutional Council

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Deputy Secretary-General of the Parliament Neil Iddawela states that new members of the Constitutional Council will be appointed next week.

The tenures of W.D.J Senevirathne, Wijitha Herath, Tilak Marapana, Sibli Asheez, and Radhika Coomaraswamy ended yesterday (September 22).  However, Deputy Secretary-General noted that the term of office of Mahinda Samarasinghe that was appointed recently by President Maithripala Sirisena had not been affected.

Along with six other members, the Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament and the Opposition Leader are also elected to the council through official power. The Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament added that members of the parliament cannot be re-elected to the Council.

The role of the Constitutional Council is the appointment of officers for various commissions and also the appointment of officers for higher posts in the public service.
