COLOMBO (News 1st) - Members of the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) announced today that they will take part in Wednesday's (Sept 5) rally organised by the opposition in Colombo. Assistant Secretary of the Government Medical Officers' Association, Dr. Navin De Soysa stated that they had formed a new group known as the "Rata surakina jana paura" and that the executive committee of this movement had decided to back the rally in protest against the FTA signed with Singapore. However Chameera Perera, Convenor of the Left Centre charges that this move clearly shows the political agenda of the ranking members of the GMOA. He noted that if the association was truly against the FTA they would support the committee appointed by the President to look into it, instead of joining the opposition protest. While noting that the acts of the GMOA are shameful, Perera suggested that the GMOA be renamed the SLPP's doctors association. He also questioned the GMOA as to wether the Rajapaksa's have given them an assurance that they would scrap the FTA if they return to power.
