Colombo (News1st) – The price of a 450g loaf of bread is set to increase by Rs 5 with effect from midnight tonight.
Chairman of the All Island Bakery Owners Association, N.K. Jayawardene stated that this decision was taken by the executive committee of the association.
“The government imposed a Rs. 20 additional tax on palm oil. The tax went up to Rs. 180. Palm oil is used for Bakery products in the country. It is used for all the Margarine products as well. The administrative council has increased the salaries by Rs. 680. We have to do that salary increase as well.”, said N.K. Jayawardene – Chairman of the All Island Bakery Owners Association
The Association also pointed out that the increase wheat flour prices by Rs. 5 is also a reason for this price increase.
It’s President N.K Jayawardhena stated that the increase in the dollar is affecting the raw materials for bakery products.
He added that, as a result, they “unwillingly have to” increase the price of a 450g loaf of bread by Rs. 5.
Jayawardene noted that the prices of other bakery products will remain unchanged.
