UPDATE: Minneriya National park re-opened

UPDATE:  4.32 PM - The Minneriya National Park which was closed yesterday following an incident where a group of fishermen attacked the Wildlife officers attached to the reserve was re-opened this evening.   COLOMBO (News 1st) - The wildlife officers of the Polonnaruwa region launched a protest today against an incident where officers of the Minneriya Wildlife reserve were attacked by a group of fishermen. The wildlife officers stated that owing to the prevailing situation, tourists have been banned from entering the Kaudulla, Minneriya, Wasgamuwa and Angamadilla reserves. The caretaker of the Kaudulla reserve stated that they will only be carrying out official operations and would refrain from carrying out any services for tourists. The attack in question took place on Sunday (Aug 26th), four wildlife officers attached to the Minneriya forest reserve sustained injuries and were admitted to the Habarana hospital. A protest has also been launched by safari jeep drivers blocking the Polonnaruwa - Colombo main road from near the entrance to the Minneriya forest reserve.
