Colombo (News1st) - In an emotional telling off to the government, JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunetti lashed out at Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe questioning the motives behind promises of rural development being made of late in villages around the country.
He flayed the Prime Ministers ‘Gamperaliya’ scheme as an ill-conceived, unimaginative, unplanned gimmick aimed at hoodwinking the public, before upcoming elections.
Addressing a public meeting in Gampaha yesterday, Handunetti said that the Prime Ministers latest pastime was going around from village to village promising that he would ‘build this and develop that’, without any real intention or plan or even the funds to do so. He also said the PM was handing out job applications – a crime as it gave innocent people a lot of hope.
“From where is the money to fund this so-called rural development? Our treasury is totally broke. He will have to import a treasury from another nation if he is to do any of this”
- Sunil Handunetti, MP.
Handunetti’s emotional speech included reference to the multiple billions in national debt Sri Lanka is burdened with, adding that billions of public debt had already been incurred to develop rural infrastructure with absolutely no results.
He went on to claim that had both BOND SCAMS not been exposed to the public, the already sky-rocketing interest rates would have crossed the 30% mark.
Handunetti noted that Sri Lanka was keeping her head above water as a nation only because of its citizens. “The people wake up each morning as the sun rises and work hard. This is the only reason this nation survives and not because of a single thing these rulers have done”, concluded a visibly emotional JVP parliamentarian.
