COLOMBO (News 1st) – Following islandwide raids, Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) have been able to take into custody 23,640 cans of fish unsuitable for human consumption.
Secretary of the Public Health Inspectors Association, Mahendra Balasooriya said the raids were conducted from the 16th to the 31st of May based on instructions issued by the Food Advisory Committee. The raids were conducted by following complaints lodged by the public regarding the quality of imported canned fish.
A health ministry spokesperson noted that PHIs had inspected nearly 60 containers of canned fish imported to the country after the 11th of April. He noted that of the 184 samples collected for testing, 149 of them contained a parasite. The ministry is currently taking steps to return the containers of canned fish to the respective countries.
