SLPP to seek judicial help to expedite elections

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Chairman of the SLPP, Professor G.L. Peris called on the Deputy Registrar of the Asgiri chapter of the Siam Sect, the Parivendipathi of the Asgiri Maha Vihara Privena Ven. Narampanawe Ananda Thero. Discussions were held on the current political situation of the country. Prof. Peris informed the thero that the Prime Minister plans to hold the Provincial council election before the Presidential election. According to Peiris this means that the election could be held in over a year. He added that the elections for some provinces have already been delayed by over 11 months. Ven. Narampanawe Ananda Thero speaking at the occasion stated that the right to vote is a basic human right and that it was wrong to keep delaying elections. While noting that the government is not doing what they were elected to do, the thero stated that delays in elections could lead to unrest. Following the meeting the leader of the SLPP, Prof. G.L. Peiris speaking to reporters noted that the SLPP will go before the Supreme court to ensure the rights of the general public.
