COLOMBO (News 1st) – Functions of the Postal Department have been hindered due to the lack of a Post Master General. It has been nearly a month since the position has remained open.
The position was earlier held by Rohana Abeyrathna, however, he was transferred to the Presidential Secretariat on the 25th of June.
Postal trade unions point out that the lack of a post mater general means that the department cannot take policy decisions or engage in day to day activities in an efficient manner.
News1st’s attempts to contact Ministry of Posts, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs, M.H.A. Haleem proved to be futile. However, a senior spokesperson at the Ministry noted that an additional secretary attached to the ministry has been assigned to overlook the Postal Department.
The spokesperson also noted that they have handed in their recommendations for a replacement to the President and are awaiting the approval of the President and the Cabinet of Ministers.
